We don’t get tired of following Ousado. Especially when it comes to bringing such good news from him. As I already have mentioned in Conexão Planeta, this male jaguar became one of the symbols of the tragedy that happened in the Pantanal in 2020, when almost 30% of the biome was destroyed by forest fires. In September of last year, Ousado was found at the Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas, near Porto Jofre, in state of Mato Grosso, by the fauna rescue team of the Ampara Silvestre organization.
Ousado had second-degree burns on his paws. With the help of partner entities, he was taken to the Instituto de Preservação e Defesa dos Felídeos da Fauna Silvestre do Brasil em Processo de Extinção (Nex), in Corumbá, state of Goiás. After more than 20 days of treatment, he was discharged in October, as related in this article. Shortly thereafter, he was finally taken back to the Pantanal and got a GPS necklace so he could be monitored.
Last week, photographer Ailton Lara made several images of Ousado, in which he appears strong and healthy. One of these images, which is reproduced here at the cover of this post, are among those published by Ampara Silvestre on its social networks. On Saturday, 07/24, the organization released the video below in which the male appears together with a female, mating:
“Images that bring us hope. The Ampara Silvestre team spotted Ousado and his partner in intimate moments yesterday afternoon…
During these 9 months of monitoring, in partnership with the Panthera team, we were able to observe its reintroduction and adaptation, follow its post-tragedy development, and it fills us with hope to conclude that it is ready for its most important mission: to perpetuate the species.
We hope, soon, to have good news of another mother in a free life to increase the number of individuals in our Pantanal”.
